New Opportunites and Second Chances

Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 car, was diagnosed with a concussion on Wednesday possibly due to a wreck during a tire test at Kansas on Aug. 29th and last week's final lap crash at Talladega. Earnhardt Jr. will sit out for the next two Chase races at Charlotte and Kansas, which will no doubt crush his championship hopes. Brushing off the wreck in August, he said he was racing at 80-90% last weekend. Dale said that he knew something was wrong after being hit in the right-rear quarter panel during last week's "Big One." After experiencing multiple headaches during the week he finally went to Dr. Jerry Petty. He was then diagnosed with a concussion. Earnhardt Jr. regrets not getting further examination after he pounded the wall at the Kansas tire test. He hopes to be clear to race by Martinsville.
Regan Smith, recently released from Furniture Row Racing, gets a new opportunity in the Cup series. Smith will be the substitute for Dale Jr. at Charlotte on Sunday. Regan Smith was suppose to pilot the No. 51 Phoenix Racing car in place of Kurt Busch, but received a text message this morning asking him if he could fill in for Dale Earnhardt Jr. That left the No. 51 car vacant. Furniture Row was able to get a certain individual who has been waiting for another shot at landing a ride in the Cup series. AJ Allmendinger. After failing a random drug test last July, AJ hasn't sat in a Sprint Cup car since. He just completed NASCAR's Road to Recovery program and was just waiting for the right opportunity. Allmendinger has done very well at Charlotte in the past, winning the pole in the Sprint Showdown earlier this season.
